Caring for your lenses
Small habits that add years to a pair of glasses — and what quietly ruins them.
Almost every scratched lens we see was scratched by its owner, doing something that felt harmless.
The things that ruin lenses
Each of these is common, and each one is avoidable.
- Wiping with a shirt — fabric drags dust across the coating
- Cleaning dry — grit needs water to lift off, not to be pushed around
- Leaving them face-down on a desk
- Hot car dashboards, which warp frames and lift coatings
- Household glass cleaner, whose ammonia strips anti-glare
How to actually clean them
Rinse under lukewarm water, one drop of dish soap rubbed gently with your fingertips, rinse again, then dry with the microfibre cloth that came in the case. Takes fifteen seconds.
Two habits worth keeping
Take glasses off with both hands — one-handed removal is what loosens hinges and bends frames out of alignment. And use the case, even for short trips.
